Overnight and vigil care

Nights are when it gets hard. Confusion is worse after dark, falls happen on the way to the bathroom, and the family member listening for every sound has not slept properly in weeks.

Most families manage days long after nights have become unmanageable. Someone with dementia may be up at two, three and five, dressed and ready to go somewhere. Someone frail may need help to the bathroom several times. Either way, the person in the next room is awake all night and then expected to function all day, and that is not sustainable for long.

An overnight caregiver means someone is genuinely awake and watching, so the rest of the house can sleep properly. That one change does more for a family’s capacity to keep going than almost anything else I offer.

Vigil care is the other kind of night. When someone is close to the end, being alone at three in the morning is the thing families fear most — for their person and for themselves. I will sit through those nights, so nobody has to, and so the family can rest enough to be present in the day.

What this looks like

Awake overnight supervision

Genuinely awake and present, not sleeping in a spare room and hoping to be woken.

Night-time toileting and transfers

Safe help to and from the bathroom, which is where most night-time falls happen.

Sundowning and night-time confusion

Calm redirection at two in the morning, without the argument an exhausted family member cannot help having.

Vigil sitting

Being present through the last nights, so that nobody is alone and the family can sleep.

A morning handover

What the night held, told plainly, so you wake up informed rather than anxious.

This is probably for you if…

  • Nobody in the house has slept through the night in weeks
  • A parent is up and wandering after dark
  • Someone is nearing the end and should not be alone at night
  • Night falls have already happened, or nearly have

Where I provide this care

In-home care across the Sierra foothills. Choose your county for what care looks like locally:

Tuolumne County

Being based in the county means same-week consultations are usually possible, and short visits are practical in a way they are not an hour away.

Calaveras County

Ongoing scheduled care works better than ad-hoc visits across a county this spread out — it is worth planning the week rather than the day.

Amador County

Best suited to longer bookings — full days, overnights and vigil care — rather than short daily visits.
